What this is
Criminal Defense, in plain terms.
The state investigates a case for months before an indictment. The defense frequently gets the file and a trial date. Closing that gap is what a defense investigator does, and in a serious matter it is not optional.
The work is unglamorous and specific. Go to the scene and photograph it the way it actually is. Find the witnesses nobody interviewed. Check whether the distances, the timings and the sight lines in the report are possible. Obtain the video before it is overwritten. Most of what changes a case is found by somebody doing that carefully.
The work
What actually gets done.
- Examine and photograph the scene, including sight lines, lighting and distances.
- Locate and interview witnesses, including those not in the state’s file.
- Test the state’s timeline against the physical facts.
- Identify and preserve surveillance video before retention periods run out.
- Background witnesses whose credibility is going to matter.
- Develop mitigation material where the case is heading for sentencing.
Legal Investigations
Built for the file, not for the story.
Statements taken on the assumption somebody will ask how. Chain of custody maintained. An investigator who can be put on the stand to speak to his own work.
What you get
At the end of it.
- An investigative report written for counsel and for the file.
- Witness statements and interview memoranda.
- Scene photography and measurements.
- An investigator prepared to testify to their own work.
When people call
The three situations we hear most.
The trial date is set
Video retention, memory and availability all run against the defense. Early work is worth more than thorough work later.
The report does not fit the scene
Distances and timings in a narrative are frequently approximations. At the location they become measurable.
Witnesses were never found
The people the state did not need are often the ones who matter to the defense.
Questions
About this service.
Do you only work for the defense?
We work for whoever engages us, but this service is built for defense counsel, where an independent investigation is frequently the only one the accused gets.
How early should an investigator be brought in?
As early as possible. Surveillance video is commonly overwritten within weeks, and a witness located in month one is a different witness from one located in month nine.
Will your investigator testify?
Yes. The work is documented on the assumption that somebody will be asked about it under oath.
Is the first conversation really free?
Yes, and it is confidential. You describe the situation, we tell you whether an investigation is likely to help, roughly what it would involve and what it would cost. There is no charge for that call and no obligation at the end of it.
