What this is
Stolen Property Recovery, in plain terms.
A stolen trailer full of tools is the end of a contractor’s month and a line on a report. Unless it is part of a larger pattern, it will not get worked, and everybody involved knows it. That is not a criticism of any department - it is the reality of a caseload.
Recovery work is unglamorous and it is often successful, because stolen property has to be turned into money and that means it has to surface. Resale listings, pawn records, auction sites, the yards and lots where this material ends up. It leaves a trail because somebody has to sell it.
The work
What actually gets done.
- Build a precise description: serial numbers, marks, modifications, photographs.
- Monitor resale channels, online marketplaces, auctions and pawn records.
- Canvass the area of the theft for cameras and for people who were there.
- Work the pattern, because equipment theft is usually repeat behavior by the same people.
- Coordinate with the department holding the report and with your insurer.
- Document the recovery so it supports both a prosecution and a claim.
Investigations
Documented, or it did not happen.
An observation nobody wrote down at the time is a memory. Every hour is logged as it happens, with times and locations, including the hours where nothing occurred.
What you get
At the end of it.
- An investigation file your insurer can work from.
- Documented identification of the property and where it surfaced.
- Everything handed to the police for recovery, which is how recovery should happen.
- A straight answer about the odds before you spend anything.
When people call
The three situations we hear most.
Tools or equipment were taken from a site
The most common call. High value, low priority, and highly traceable if somebody looks.
It has happened more than once
Repeat theft from the same business is a pattern, and patterns are what investigations are good at.
Your insurer needs more than a report number
A documented investigation moves a claim along and can change what gets paid.
Questions
About this service.
Will you go and get my property back?
We locate and document. Recovery itself goes through law enforcement, who can seize property lawfully and who will not create a confrontation that puts anybody in danger or in court.
What if I have no serial numbers?
It is harder and not hopeless. Photographs, modifications, wear, repairs and receipts can all identify a specific item. Send us everything you have.
Is it worth it for a few thousand dollars of tools?
Sometimes not, and we will say so. When it is a repeat pattern, or the value is high, or an insurance claim turns on it, it usually is.
Is the first conversation really free?
Yes, and it is confidential. You describe the situation, we tell you whether an investigation is likely to help, roughly what it would involve and what it would cost. There is no charge for that call and no obligation at the end of it.
