What this is

Unsolved Crime, in plain terms.

Detectives carry more cases than any person can work at once, and a case without new information moves to the bottom of the pile. That is not indifference, it is arithmetic. But the family of the person it happened to is still living inside it, and for them nothing has gone quiet at all.

What an outside investigator brings is undivided attention and no institutional history with the file. We re-interview people who have had years to reconsider what they saw, we go back through the public record, and we look for the thread nobody pulled. When something surfaces it goes to the agency with jurisdiction, because that is who can act on it.

The work

What actually gets done.

  • Read everything that exists: reports, filings, coverage, prior statements.
  • Re-interview witnesses, including the ones who said nothing at the time.
  • Canvass the scene and the neighborhood again, sometimes years later.
  • Identify witnesses who were never located, and locate them.
  • Pursue physical and documentary leads that the original timeline did not reach.
  • Deliver anything new to the investigating agency, with the documentation behind it.

Investigations

Documented, or it did not happen.

An observation nobody wrote down at the time is a memory. Every hour is logged as it happens, with times and locations, including the hours where nothing occurred.

What you get

At the end of it.

  • An honest assessment, before you spend anything, of whether there is anywhere left to go.
  • A written case review of what exists and where the gaps are.
  • Documentation of every new interview and lead.
  • A defined stopping point, so the work has an end.

When people call

The three situations we hear most.

The case has gone quiet

Calls are not returned, not out of malice but because there is nothing new to report.

There was a witness nobody found

Somebody saw it. Being unfindable in 2019 does not mean being unfindable now.

You need to know it was worked

Sometimes the outcome of a review is that everything possible was done. That answer is worth having too.

Questions

About this service.

Can you reopen a police case?

No. Only the agency with jurisdiction can do that, and only a prosecutor can charge. What an independent investigator can do is develop new information and hand it to them, which is the ordinary route by which a cold case starts moving again.

Will you tell me if there is nothing there?

Yes, and we would rather tell you early. A case review that concludes there is no viable avenue left is a real result, and it costs a fraction of a long investigation that reaches the same place.

Do you work with the family or with the attorney?

Either. Where counsel is involved it is usually better to be engaged through them.

Is the first conversation really free?

Yes, and it is confidential. You describe the situation, we tell you whether an investigation is likely to help, roughly what it would involve and what it would cost. There is no charge for that call and no obligation at the end of it.

Where we work

Four metros, and the rest of Texas.

Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and San Antonio are where most cases start. Coverage runs to the whole state, and records and asset work is run nationally.

Free consultation

Tell us what is going on. The first call is free.

Describe the situation and we will tell you honestly whether an investigation would help, what it would involve and what it would cost. Confidential, no obligation, and no charge for the conversation.
